Before we start talking about Munich, the endless amounts of booze we consumed, and our awesome Oktoberfest outfits, let’s backtrack a bit. What we originally wanted to do after Belgium was spend a day or two in Lake Bled, Slovenia, but getting there turned out to be rather tricky considering our timeframe, so we decided to make a quick stop in Salzburg, Austria. Two main facts we knew about Salzburg: 1) It was the birthplace of Mozart and 2) “The Sound of Music” was filmed here. We checked out the home where Mozart was born, took a funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Castle, and walked around Old Town where they held a mini Oktoberfest celebration of their own.
On to Munich, Germany. We had quite the first day exploring the city and taking a quick peek at Oktoberfest to see what all the hype was about. We were pleased to find that it wasn’t just a drinking festival with giant beer tents pitched up, but a full-on carnival with a fair amount of rides and games. After a beer or two, we decided to head back to our hotel until…TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR. A bunch of festival goers (including ourselves) ran underneath a tunnel to find shelter from the rain. After waiting a good half hour to see if the rain would die down, we decided to make a run for it and found an available cab despite us getting drenched. Day two consisted of a few historical building visits including the Glockenspiel and Frauenkirche, but we’d be lying if we said most of our time wasn’t spent shopping for Lederhosen and Dirndls (traditional German garb). The next day was solely committed to fully experiencing Oktoberfest in all it’s glory. We dressed up, visited more than half of the enormous beer tents, witnessed several beer chugging competitions, drank, ate, and even went on a few rides. We were in bed by 9 pm.
